Taster Day 2011:
A selection of photos from this year's event...

Last years Taster Day 2010

Taster Day courses are run at the end of the summer term for parents of Y6 and Y8 students (no students allowed - give Mum and Dad a go!). The aim is to have fun and find out more about Technological learning by doing a Year 9 project together. They are always very popular and everyone has a great time learning new skills, making new friends and understanding a bit more about what we do here at the College.

An application for is posted on this page around mid May for each course and they run on a Saturday, usually one or two weeks before the end of term.

Winnie and Linda made this video for their Taster Day project. Enjoy!

Letter to parents 2011.

Dear Y6 and Y8 parents,

The Faculty of Design & Technology and ICT will be running ‘taster courses’ for parents of Year 6 and 8 students on Saturday June 18th. The aim of the day is to give some of our parents a chance to try out one of the projects that we teach in Year 9 and to understand a little more about Technological learning. It is a great opportunity to try your hand at designing and making some cool products, as well as meet other parents and to have some time to talk socially about learning here at Sha Tin College. The event will also support the Y9 option choice process which begins next academic year. The courses will be run by myself (Tim Ford, Head of Faculty; Technology and ICT), Alan Dickson (Head of ICT) and Jutka Czirok (DT & ICT teacher) We will also be ably supported by Philip Sze (Workshop Instructor) and Albert Sze (Workshop Technician).

Due to the popularity of the event last year, we have increased the number of courses available to four. You can select one of the following:

  1. 1. MP3 docking station or ‘MiniAmp’. Tim Ford will take you through the day designing and making a fully working docking station for your iPod or MP3 player which you can take home at the end of the day.
  2. 2. Jewellery design and manufacture. Jutka Czirok will show you how to design and make your own high quality metal jewellery using an ancient casting technique along with a presentation box. Who knows, if you work quickly, you might be able to make two!
  3. 3. Video project. Mr. Dickson will guide you through a range of ICT-based video production systems, resulting in your own professional production. Try out the green screen! Absolutely no prior knowledge of ICT needed, a great opportunity for those who see their future in Hollywood!
  4. 4. Gadget / Pencil case. The team will take you through this textiles based project in which you can make your own personalised case for stationery, gadgets, phones, etc. You will learn how to use a sewing machine and use some modern printing systems to give your product the ‘wow’ factor.

The day will run from 9:00 am to around 4:00 pm and lunch/refreshments will be provided. There is a $100 charge for the day which covers the costs of your materials. All staff are providing their time voluntarily.

The day is especially aimed at parents who may not be familiar with Design & Technology / ICT and who would like to develop some new practical technological skills. We will be using plenty of ICT throughout the day on all three courses. You do not need to have any prior knowledge or experience of these areas, we will provide all the tuition you need!

Please complete the form below, remember to click 'submit' at the end. As numbers are limited to 12 per course, could I request that only one family member attends and to remind you that the day is for our parents, not our students! Places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis and we will send you further details in due course if you wish to attend. Many thanks for your interest and I hope you will be eager to sign up!

Yours sincerely,

Tim Ford.
Head of Faculty; Technology and ICT.
